Scouting into a new year!!

Our Pack is growing as always and the fun continues. This year for recruitment night Pack meeting we had an active station with hula hoop team building activities, created a bead neckerchief slide, and blasted 2L rocket bottle into the sky. My littlest "scout" has another year to wait until Kindergarten but don't tell him that!!

Hula Hoop Team Building Games

Need an easy game to get kids up and moving? Want to encourage team building or have some friendly competition? Here's a few ideas for you!

Hula Hoop Pass

Equipment: 2 Hula Hoops

Have the group stand in a circle and hold hands. Place a hula hoop around the arms of two Scouts to start. Have the group figure out how to pass the hula hoop around the entire circle without ever undoing hands or letting go. If they master that try it with two hula hoops (Same start point passing two together).

Rock Paper Scissors Relay

Before You Start:

• Divide into two groups with each group in a single file line.
• Each line of players starts at the ends of the “U”
• Review how to Ro Sham Bo (also called Rock-Paper-Scissors).
• Make sure everyone know where to go when they win and when they don't.
  
  

Set Up:

Set out a path using hula hoops. Place one group at the start on each side.

How To Play:

• The goal of the game is for a player from one line to make it to the start of the opposite team's line.
• The game begins on a signal from the leader.
• The first players in each line begin jumping with both feet into each hoop on the path towards each other.
• When the first two players from opposite teams encounter each other on the path, they stop and Rock, Paper, Scissors, until one player wins.
• The winner continues jumping/hopping on the path in the same direction, while the other side allows their next player to do the same on the path.
• Again when the players encounter each other, they do Rock, Paper, Scissors, until one player wins.
• The game continues until one player makes it all the way to the other side. Then that player rejoins her/his line and two new players begin.

  Bean Bag Balance Race
  
  
  Set Up:
  • Set out 5 hoops in a row and 5 more right next to them (5 by 2 grid)
  • place equal number of bean bags in the starting hoop for each person (2)
  
  
  
  
  How To Play:
  • This is a race in groups of two
  • Each player starts behind the first hula hoop on their side and has bean bags inside the hula hoop
  • While in a push up/plank position on their arms and toes they move the bean bags one at a time to the next hop in their line then move themselves all without breaking their position
  • The first to travers the entire line of 5 hoops with their bean bags wins.

This look like a fun way to help your Scout become more proficient with knot tying all while having fun!! Family battles for knot making and everyone can be a pro next campout. We don't yet own this but once we do I'll post back!!


2. Survivor Kid book

Written by a veteran search and rescue professional this book is touted as having practical easy to understand knowledge. It's level says around 9 so most Scouts should be able to comprehend and read all on their own! We don't yet own this but once we do I'll post back!!

Spunky, funny kids

Kids really so say the darnedest things. When you have a spunky second child you often wonder how your third child could possibly surprise you... and then they do.

O is newly 4 years old now and due to his mainly liquid tube fed diet potty training isn't 100%. We are both working hard on that. Yesterday, he came home from preschool and I forgot to prompt him. A few seconds later he's singing a favorite annoying YouTube song, Johnny Johnny. I hear, "Johnny, Johnny eating sugar? No papa. Johnny, Johnny peeing in your pants," and look over to sure enough see the wet spot spreading down his legs. So now I 100% know it's not all innocent accidents!!

His older brother C had one Oreo left from his special Lunchable lunch on this same day. We placed it high up on the counter out of reach of everyone. He warned everyone (except O who was already at preschool) not to touch it and kept harping about this sacred saved Oreo. A few minutes later after the infamous Johnny Johnny episode, in walks a chocolate faced O who says, "was I supposed to eat an Oreo, mom?" Needless to say he wasn't supposed to eat an Oreo and we hid all evidence that said Oreo ever existed and so far C hasn't remembered it!!

First Day Printable - Kindergarten

Connecting with Kid Knex!

We were fortunate enough to be chosen to host a Kid K'nex exploration party through Tryazon. We got to explore their building sets aimed at the preschool market and it was pure LOVE. I have to admit I already owned two sets of these building block type toys that I had scavenged form garage sales. At the time of purchase I checked online and couldn't find more. I'm so glad to see them readily available and a new focus point for K'nex brands. THEY ARE AMAZING. Our local science museum has them out for free play and they are always busy. If you have a toddler through early elementary school age child they will enjoy them.

How are they different than other building sets??

Like other K'nex products, the pieces connect easily to make 3-d builds. These sets include pieces like eyeballs, fins, feet, and more. My children build geometric masterpieces along with crazy animal monsters.

You're luckier than I was years ago searching for Kid K'nex because they're available online through Amazon! These would be a perfect Christmas gift for grandparents wanting to make parents happy with a stimulating choice and children happy with fun!!

Learning with Lauri

We were picked to host a Learning with Lauri party through Tryazon! This means our family received a box of their products in order to share and explore it with our friends. I hosted the party at the local elementary school which serves as a great meeting space for friends!!

Lauri was founded by a school teacher in 1961. They're a staple in most preschools these days and the classic Lauri stacker is a favorite. I was so excited to see the new twist on the classic stacker set, Action Stackers! Even my 8yr old who swears he was way to old to play with preschool toys has been busy building and playing. The addition of the moveable pieces were key!

In addition to the Action Stackers, we got to sample tall stackers with a peg board, objects magnetic set, actions language cards, create-a-scene magnetic farm, shape and color sorter, and a crepe rubber puzzle.

The actions cards are perfect for any number of language and movement exploration games. I have actually used them with even older children to play charades. All little ones seem to love magnets. We use a large magnet board at home and a portable one on car rides. They tell stories and play games all using the picture magnets.

I love Lauri products, we love Lauri products!! Lauri products by Playmonster were already a staple on our preschool learning shelves and through Tryazon we've found new favorites too!!
